John studied Arts and Theology at Edinburgh University, at the Graduate School of Ecumenical Studies and at the University of Geneva.  At one point in his career he worked in the world mission area, and visited churches in five continents on behalf of the Council for World Mission. 

John served as President of the Congregational Union of Scotland. He is currently chairman of the Scottish United Reformed and Congregational College; he is a member of the Training Committee of the United Reformed Church; he serves the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in a public liaison capacity and as a Lay Examiner for the inter-collegiate MRCS, and is a member of the Rotary Club of Braids.His hobbies include writing, and he has been a contributor to national publications in the field of Scottish History, and Ecumenical Theology.

John served as Moderator of the Presbytery of Edinburgh 2007-08.
