Callum is well known to the younger people of MUC - and he is also the son of Revd Peter Macdonald, formerly of St George's West, and now the Leader of the Iona Community. Callum describes here a marvellous, growing project which is now making a significant global impact. Please support him if you can.
My name is Callum Macdonald, I'm a student at
Glasgow University and I'm working at the Argyll Hotel on Iona this
summer. In September I'm hoping to volunteer as a journalist at the
Homeless World Cup in Rio de Janeiro, where 64 national teams of
homeless players, including 8 women's teams, will be united on
Copacabana Beach for a week-long 5-a-side football tournament. In order
to realise this target, I am required to raise £800 for one of the
players to take part, on top of my own travel and accomodation costs.
So far this summer, I have been organising various fundraising events
on Iona, such as pub quizzes, discos and a games day, and will soon be
planning a bigger event for August. I first encountered the HWC when it
was held in Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh five years ago,and the
buzz and atmosphere generated by the players and supporters made a big
impact on me. It's great that football has provided a focus of
friendship and inspiration for homeless people from all over the world.
The HWC also challenges the attitudes, ignorance and injustice
experienced by women and men who are too often forgotten and treated as
outcasts.
If you can spare a few pounds to help support this
fantastic cause, it would be greatly appreciated! I have set up a 'Just
Giving' account to enable supporters to make online donations, and you
can find it at http://www.justgiving.com/Callum-Macdonald I plan to write articles and reports from Rio, so please let me know if you'd like something for any publications or groups.
Here is some more information about the Homeless World Cup and its impact:
The
Homeless World Cup was set up in 2001 to utilise street football as a
catalyst for social change. The annual tournament provides a once in a
lifetime opportunity to the homeless and excluded to represent their
country and change their lives forever. It has triggered and supports
grass roots football projects in over 70 nations working with over
30,000 homeless and excluded people throughout the year.

As part of the Centenary Conference - Edinburgh 2010 - to mark 100 years since the famous Edinburgh Conference that changed the face of the world church, and among other things led to the formation of the World Council of Churches - we were delighted to welcome guests at MUC. From the left: Rose (a member of MUC), Theodore from WCC Staff, Geneva, Sarah from Zambia, Roy from the USA, McDonald from Malawi and Lori from Canada. [It was a day of reunions: not only was Revd McDonald Kadawati Rose's minister from years ago in Malawi - but Dr Roy Medley and John Smith were room mates when they both studied in Geneva - and were catching up after 37 years. Roy is now the Executive Secretary of American Baptist Churches.]

Behind the church there is a secret garden which was until recently a bit of a jungle. We are delighted that some folk have now taken on the task of turning this into a green and productive space. The Church School has planted potatoes, others have planted shrubs and trees and flowers.
On Trinity Sunday, Jenny Williams, Marianna Clyde and Mike Hall led a time of prayer and reflection - at which we asked a blessing on the work done and the work that remained to be done. Some of the Church School got involved too with a watering can!

PALM SUNDAY 2010 - a busy morning in church with Palm Crosses being handed out by the Church School to everyone present. And we enjoyed a Holy Week drama (from the Wild Goose Resource Group), directed by Fran, which looked at the reactions of various groups of people around the Holy Week story.
Here are disciples and pharisees playing their parts.
