About Us
Worship and WaffleOn Sunday evenings, we join together with the folks at our neighbouring Christ Church Morningside in their church centre for Worship and Waffle, a time of quieter, reflective worship. Week by week this varies in style from Iona Community communion liturgy, over choral evensong to Taize chants and contemplative silence. After the worship, there is an opportunity to stay for tea and coffee while we chat around some of the faith issues and questions we encounter in our life as Christians. It is a friendly and relaxed environment to share ideas, questions and experiences - and perhaps even actual waffles might be involved...
Art GroupSince February 2012, our Art Group meets again, on the first Tuesday of each month from 11am to 3pm. It is a group for artists and all those who would like to try themselves out - all are welcome to come, see and try!
Who we are+We are rooted in our Christian heritage and guided by traditional creeds, such as those from the Church of Scotland and the United Reformed Church both of which we are a part. +We come together as the primary expression of our community weekly in worship around the one God who unites us in all our diversity. +We intentionally seek to be inclusive and open to dialogue and not to draw boundaries. We all bring our convictions and our doubts, mutually supporting one another as the body of Christ. +As a result, we are an eclectic mix of people from almost every Christian background and many nations. We have strong ecumenical ties with our neighbouring Scottish Episcopal congregation, Christ Church. This statement does not tell the whole story of who we are. You are always welcome to come and see! What we doWe are a diverse and lively congregation, of many different ages and stages in life, different backgrounds and different nationalities, different denominations even. Yet, we enjoy bringing our many and varied gifts together, and sharing our stories as we meet together at MUC. Visitors and new faces are always welcome! Every Sunday morning, we meet for worship at 11am (10.30am during July and August). The worship life of our church is best described as 'evolving traditional'; Drawing on the best of Christian worship from two millenia, while always measuring it against the needs and style of a modern congregation in South Edinburgh. Our services are usually led by our ministers, Rev John Smith and Rev Fran Ruthven, as well as our Director of Music, Dr Alberto Massimo. You can read more about them here. During the service, the children have an opportunity to explore 'Godly Play' in Church School, while babies and toddler meet in the creche. We enjoy sharing coffee and tea, and the occasional lunch, in our church hall (or in our garden) after the services. During the week, many different groups use our building, so it's quite lively. The church office is also open on Mondays to Thursdays, 9am - 3pm. Here you can find out more about our Admin and Finance Officer Dorothea Nelson. Our Prayer Group meets fortnightly on Fridays in the Church Vestibule. We are an eco-congregation, trying to work towards protecting and sustaining God's creation. We also promote the Fairtrade movement, and regulalry have a Fairtrade stall in our church hall after services. Each May, we also hold a Christian Aid booksale, together with our neighbours from Christ Church Morningside. However, these are just little snippets of what's happening at MUC. Come and see for yourself - we look forward to meeting you!
